MY LIFE IN TRAINS
Lineside and Station Sequences
Part Thirty Seven
Clay Cross on 31 May 1963
The same afternoon I hitched north with no set destination, in search of steam. I ended up just north of Clay Cross station where a cutting side gave me a good vantage point. This was of the Midland Railway Derby and Nottingham lines just north of where they merge into a four track main line, close to Avenue Sidings south of Hasland yard and shed.
I took nineteen photos in just under three hours from 16:00 until 18:55 – it must have been fairly busy because I didn’t photograph many of the diesels! By the end it was getting quite dark – it shows in the photos – and I still had to hitch hike back to Leicester, hopefully in time for my evening meal in hall.
I’d photographed eighteen steam locomotives from nine classes, plus a DMU and a couple of Brush Type 4s.
The steam classes were:
1 MR 4F 0-6-0
1 LMSR Crab 2-6-0
1 LMSR Jubilee 4-6-0
3 Black 5 4-6-0s
1 LMSR Fairburn 2-6-4T
4 LMSR 8F 2-8-0s
4 WD 2-8-0s
1 BR 2 2-6-0 (twice)
2 BR 9F 2-10-0s
If you followed My Story you will have seen most of them before.
