Lineside and Station Sequences
Part Thirty Two

Hadley Wood on 1 August 1962

Now that A Level exams were over, and I was waiting for my results to see if I would go to university to study geology, I went back to the lineside, this time at Hadley Wood. I’d abandoned the Adox film experiment, and gone back to trusty FP3, so these negatives were much better. As usual, my fastest shutter speed wasn’t fast enough, but you’ll get a good idea of the changes happening on the East Coast Main Line.

Over four hours I took twenty six photos and I photographed thirteen classes, seven steam and six diesel. Add to that all the DMus that I didn’t photograph, and the one I did.

There were five classes of Pacific: one A1, one A2, three A3s and one A4 from the LNER, and a Britannia from BR. The other steam classes were two V2 2-6-2s, one WD 2-8-0 and two 9F 2-10-0s.

The diesel locos were one English Electric Type 1, one BR Type 2, one Brush Type 2, one BR Peak, five English Electric Type 4s and five Deltics. For the first time diesel locomotives outnumbered steam, fourteen to twelve. You might like to compare this tally with those I photographed less than a year before at Potters Bar in Part 29 of this series.
